Sets per Muscle Group is a Hevy Pro statistic that helps you understand how your training volume is distributed across different muscle groups.
Instead of only looking at the total number of sets in your workouts, this statistic shows how many sets each muscle group has received over time. This makes it easier to see which muscles you train frequently and which may be getting less attention.
Why Track Sets per Muscle Group?
Tracking your sets by muscle group can help you:
- Monitor your training volume: See how many sets each muscle group is receiving over time.
- Identify imbalances: Quickly spot muscle groups you may be favouring or neglecting.
- Manage recovery: Notice when a muscle group may be receiving significantly more training volume than others.
- Better understand compound exercises: Compound exercises can train several muscles at once, accounting for both primary and secondary muscles involved and helping you track how each set contributes to multiple muscle groups.
Where Can I Find Sets per Muscle Group?
To view this statistic:
- Open the Profile tab.
- Tap Statistics.
- Select Set Count per Muscle Group.
- Select the checkbox beside the muscle group you would like to display on the graph.
You can select multiple muscle groups to compare their training volume.
The number beside each muscle group shows the set count for the selected period.
Adjusting the Graph
You can customize the graph using the options at the top of the screen.
- The first dropdown controls the overall time period displayed on the graph.
- The second dropdown controls how frequently data points are grouped and displayed.
This allows you to look at your set volume over shorter or longer periods depending on what you want to track.
How Does Hevy Calculate Sets per Muscle Group?
Hevy calculates set counts based on the primary and secondary muscles assigned to each exercise.
- Primary muscle: Each completed set counts as 1 set.
- Secondary muscle: Each completed set counts as 0.5 sets.
- Warm-up sets: Warm-up sets are also included in the set count.
Example:
If you complete 4 sets of an exercise where the chest is the primary muscle and the triceps are a secondary muscle, Hevy will count:
- Chest: 4 sets
- Triceps: 2 sets
This helps account for the additional work secondary muscles receive during compound exercises without counting it the same as direct work.
How Many Sets Should I Complete per Muscle Group?
There isn't one set count that will be right for everyone. The amount of training volume you need can depend on your experience level, goals, exercise selection, training intensity, and ability to recover.
Research commonly suggests that approximately 10–20 sets per muscle group per week can be an effective range for muscle growth, but this should be treated as a general guideline rather than a requirement.
Your ideal training volume may be higher or lower depending on your individual training and goals.
